The automatic Caliber 9SA5 will serve as a workhorse for a new generation of Grand Seiko mechanical watches, while the Caliber 9RA5 builds upon the brand’s proprietary Spring Drive technology to improve functionality and performance.
“The new 9SA5 Hi-Beat 36000 caliber changes almost every aspect compared to our existing Hi-Beat 36000, the 9S85, which was first introduced in 2009,” said Brice Le Troadec, president of Grand Seiko Corporation of America, in an email. “The changes in movement architecture, design, and new innovations within the escapement allow Grand Seiko to create something dynamically new for our brand, as well as others in the industry.”
Developers set out to achieve the same level of stable accuracy as the brand’s existing 36,000 vph movement while generating a longer power reserve. Three technical advances have endowed the Caliber 9SA5 with a precision rate of +5 to –3 seconds a day and a power reserve of 80 hours.
First, a new dual impulse escapement enables the escapement wheel to transmit power directly to the balance, resulting in increased efficiency. In addition, the new free-sprung balance specifically developed for the 9SA5 retains its precision for longer and is more resistant to shock and friction.
Finally, the caliber’s horizontal gear train layout reduces the movement’s thickness by 15%. Other advances include two barrels, arranged in sequence, to enhance the power reserve, a virtually instantaneous date change, and the positioning of the winding stem close to the rotor so the watch sits closer to the wrist
“Our new Hi-Beat 9SA5 caliber has some of the signatures often associated with ‘haute horology,’ such as an overcoil or free-sprung balance,” Le Troadec says. “By adding these advances, we have created an entirely new and innovative escapement.”
