Ryan Gosling Teams Up With TAG Heuer On Hilarious New Short Film, ‘The Chase For Carrera’

When Ryan Gosling was announced as TAG Heuer’s latest ambassador in 2022, watch fans were immediately stoked. One of the coolest (and funniest) guys in Hollywood, Ryan perfectly encapsulates the suave yet free-spirited character of TAG Heuer watches – and for a watch brand that’s inextricably tied to motorsports, it makes sense having an actor who counts a film called Drive as one of his most iconic roles to be wearing your watches…
Ryan’s actually been Down Under filming his latest action movie, The Fall Guy, with well-known director David Leitch (who you might know as the director of John Wick or Bullet Train) – but in a development that’s sure to please watch fans, particularly Aussie watch fans, he’s also taken some time out from filming that flick to star in a hilarious, playful and high-budget short film to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Carrera as well as the release of the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Glassbox.
The film, called The Chase for Carrera, is a deliciously meta action-comedy romp that sees Ryan playing himself as he tries to escape from a film set with his Carrera Glassbox whilst being pursued by a committed prop master who needs the watch back, played by SNL alumn Vanessa Bayer.
After filming an action sequence where he’s got the Carrera on his wrist, Ryan does everything he can to avoid giving his Carrera back to the prop master – including stealing a vintage Porsche 911 and racing through the backlots of a film studio just to have another few minutes with the exciting new luxury timepiece.
Not only does the film emphasise Gosling’s genuine love for the Carrera, but it’s also a brilliant showcase of his comedic chops, with the banter he has with Bayer and Leitch (who plays himself as the on-screen director in a knowing nod to its film-within-a-film set-up).
The 5-minute film is also jam-packed full of easter eggs that pay homage to the Carrera’s 60-year history… We won’t spoil it for you, but keep your eyes out.
TAG Heuer has really tried to treat the ad like a Hollywood blockbuster. It’s even got its own Hollywood posters and timeless taglines, like “How bad does he want that watch?” We can definitely relate to wanting to run off with a Carrera after trying one on, that’s for sure.
The watch industry is often guilty of being a bit too serious; a bit too full of itself, which is a shame, because watches are inherently romantic and playful things. The Chase for Carrera reminds us of that – even if we aren’t all Hollywood stars who can get away with nicking cars so we can get a little more one-on-one time with a coveted watch.
