Hublot has made a $24,000 watch from recycled Nespresso capsules and coffee grounds
Hublot is known for constantly pushing the boundaries of horological engineering and experimenting with unique materials to create avant-garde timepieces. The Swiss manufacturer has partnered with Nespresso to introduce a new limited edition Big Bang timepiece that focuses on recycling and circularity. Over the last seven years, Nespresso has collaborated with prestigious Swiss brands through its Second Life initiative to come up with ways to make new products from used aluminum capsules. The new co-branded Hublot timepiece is also a part of the same initiative. Called the Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin, it’s the first ever horological creation to be made using recycled Nespresso aluminum capsules and coffee grounds.
Nespresso’s branding on the watch appears in the most subtle manner. The famous N symbol emblazoned on the crown is the brand’s only signature that can be found on the watch. The green colorway of the limited-edition watch is inspired by the Master Origins Peru Organic Nespresso pod. The 42mm case is entirely crafted out of recycled aluminum, of which 28% comes from Nespresso coffee capsules. The case is anodized in vibrant green before being satin finished and polished. The crown and pusher are also given the same treatment. Hublot says the caseback and container housing of the movement are made out of eco-titanium.
The eco-friendly timepiece is offered with two straps that are also made out of recycled materials. To create the fabric strap, Hublot partnered with SingTex, one of Nespresso’s partners that manufactures a fabric called Scafé made out of coffee grounds. The strap is made from 100% recycled fabric that is composed of 5% coffee grounds and 95% recycled polyester.
The Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin is powered by Hublot’s HUB1280 Unico automatic chronograph movement. Only 200 examples of the watch will be made. As for the pricing, you can get one of these for EUR 25,200 (about $24,000).
