Launched in February 2005, the OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean marked the first full-scale use of Omega's proprietary Co-Axial Escapement movement in the Seamaster divers' watch collection and has become a modern classic in its’ own right. Its’ attractive and distinctive recalls that of the first-ever Seamaster 300 metre model and completes a triumvirate modern equivalents of classic OMEGA watches which include the Speedmaster and the Railmaster which like the classic 300m watch, were launched in 1957.

Available in two different case sizes (45.5mm and 42 mm in diameter), the Planet Ocean models are readily identified by their bezels, with a choice between classic and highly contemporary styles. Meticulous attention to detail resulted in two slightly different bezel designs, with the larger model taking on a resolutely sporty look and the finer grooves on the smaller model offering a more subtle finish. Fitted to the bezel is an aluminium ring, one third of which is visible in its original brushed surface, the other two thirds in a choice of black or orange - a colour chosen because it is one of the most visible under water. The unidirectional bezel has minute graduations for the first fifteen minutes and numbers for the subsequent ten-minute sectors and a luminous triangular marker at 12 o'clock. Other characteristic indicators that this is a classic divers' watch are the watertight screw-in crown and the helium escape valve. Located at 10 o'clock and embossed with "He", the chemical symbol for helium, the latter allows any helium atoms that may penetrate the watch during compression in a diving bell to escape during decompression, thus avoiding any potential damage to the watch. The excellent water resistance down to 600 metres (2000 feet) is further guaranteed by a screw-in case back.

A special jewelry edition of the classic “ Bond Edition ” of the OMEGA Seamaster Professional Diver was produced in 1998. The models were in either yellow or white 18-carat gold and featured a skeletonized version of the movement, each part of which was individually crafted and engraved by hand.
The dial of this 300m-rated watch was in enamel with the OMEGA symbol at 12 o’clock with the word Seamaster and the hippocampus in the 6 o’clock position. A domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal displays this and a front view of the highly-decorative skeleton movement.

Did you know that Omega used Silicon in its' development of the cal 8500 because of the material's non-magnetic properties? Thus, the performance of the Si 14 balance-spring is not disturbed by exposure to magnetic objects. This physical property of silicon allows watches with the Si 14 balance-spring to deliver significantly better chronometric performance than balance-springs made of traditional materials. While the performance of mechanical watches tends to deviate over time as a result of small everyday shocks, these disturbances have very little effect on the Si 14 silicon balance-springs. There is substantial freedom in the fabrication of balance-springs made of silicon which allows the Si 14’s geometry to be modified for optimal isochronism, a factor that reduces the amount of deviation in the accuracy of a watch.

Did you know that when the Speedmaster was launched in 1957, the first model being the CK-2915-2, it was originally conceived as a sports chronograph with a tachymetric scale, the idea being inspired by Italian sports cars of the era.

With the trend in the 70s much more in favor of larger cases with hooded lugs, Omega decided to launch a second series of Speedmaster models using the ' Mark ' designation to distinguish the line from the original 1957-originated Speedmaster Professional. While they differed in appearance, the Mark series as in the Mark II shown here was essentially a Speedy Pro as we know it though with different ' clothes '. Did you know though that for the first time in the history of the Omega Speedmaster, the watch used a flat mineral crystal with the tachymetre scale on the inside of the crystal.

When the Railmaster was launched in 1957 it was introduced primarily for the benefit of professionals who worked near magnetic fields. Omega had chosen the name to reflect the company’s longstanding relationship with railways. In the early days of rail travel, the high degree of precision achieved by Omega’s watches meant that these timepieces were the choice of many of the world’s railways. When electrification came to the industry in the 50s, the large electromagnetic motors used in locomotives presented a new set of problems for watches of the period. Omega’s solution was to encase the Railmaster in a mu-metal cage which protected the movement to 1000 Gauss, the only other watch capable of this was the IWC Ingenieur. This was a significant advancement as most anti-magnetic watches then were rated to only a maximum of 80 Gauss. Their resistance was thus considered low. Other companies produced anti-magnetic watches but none were to be as highly resistant to magnetic fields. Omega’s use of mu-metal indeed placed the company at the cutting edge of technology.

The first generation of the Ploprof was introduced in 1970 back in the days before watches with an appreciable depth-rating could be taken for granted. While other companies worked with helium escape valves to overcome the issue of crystals “popping” during decompression due to helium absorption, Omega resorted to creating an impenetrable case.
