subirimagenesA legend says that in the 70’s, Paul Newman asked Rolex to create a special Daytona dial for his personal use. Another one says that Paul was wearing a Daytona in his 1969’s movie “Winning” with Robert Wagner and Joanne Woodward (Paul’s wife). The last theory, the true one, was just that Joanne Woodward offered him this watch, engraved “Drive slowly. Joanne” on the case-back, when he started racing in 1972.
This “exotic” dial was an option for the standard Daytona 6263 (with screw pusher) and the Daytona 6239 (with pump pusher), originally only for the US market. We can estimate that only 1 model out of 10 was issued “exotic” for the 6239 (i.e. around 1000 units) & only 1 out of 4 for the 6263 ( I.e 250 units).
