Well, personally I doubt that we shall see the birth of a competitor to ETAs very soon when it comes to mechanical movements. The reason being that ETA enjoys the tremendous benefit of scale of economies and therefore corners the all important after sales market trainingwise and partswise.
The combined production of all other manufacturers of mechanical movements will not go beyond about 2,000,000 pieces per year for a long time to come. The combined Swiss watch industry manufactures some 6,500,000 mechanical movements a year. Rolex on its own makes about 700,000 units. This leaves 5,800,000 mechanical movements to be spread amongst the remainder of the industry. Currently, all others combined (those having their own movements) do not come up with more than 800,000 movements per year.
