Originally created in just yellow gold, the Tank Américaine was a response to the changing tides of watch trends. The late 1980s and early 1990s were the beginning of the era of large watches, and Cartier was trying to create something a bit more substantial that might convince someone looking for a heftier piece to wear a Tank instead. The watch was clearly inspired by the Cintrée of old, with its curved case and curved chapter ring, but it differed in a number of ways. One important distinction is that the reverse of the case has a flat (or flat-ish) caseback instead of the dramatically curved caseback of the Cintrée. The result is a watch that still appears curved while being technically easier to manufacture, though you do feel the difference on the wrist a bit.

Pre-SIHH 2018 Rotonde de Cartier Skeleton Mysterious Double Tourbillon

Τhe Mysterious Double Tourbillon movement created at the La Chaux-de- Fonds Manufacture in 2013 represents a milestone in Cartier watchmaking history: the tourbillon appears to be suspended in mid-air with no connection to the rest of the movement.



As a double flying tourbillon, it effects a complete rotation in 60 seconds, while the tourbillon cage performs a second rotation in which each round takes 5 minutes. This balancing act is all the more formidable in view of the finely constructed case and painstaking craftsmanship.



All of the components are handfinished: the bridges chamfered, anks drawn and screw heads polished. This year’s addition of skeletonised bridges in the shape of Roman numerals enhances the lightness and power of the watch.The magic of the mysterious is encased in the transparency of the skeleton. The curves of the watch and mysterious movement are complemented by the stark geometric openwork architecture of the skeletonised bridges.
