Ενδιαφέρουσα ιστοριούλα από έναν από τους πιο γνωστούς watchmakers στην πόλη:

A couple weeks ago I met a young, 19 year old kid. It was a random encounter in that he did not know what I do for living. We started talking watches – and he opened up with an amazing story.

The young man – let's call him Tom – is obsessed with the Rolex 36mm turquoise Oyster perpetual. The watch is listed on the Rolex website at $7,850. He emailed Sydney’s authorized dealers enquiring about the availability. The dealer emailed back promptly saying that the watch is in 'high demand', and that Tom could be placed on the waiting list. However, in the same email, he was offered 3 different Rolex watches: A $9,900 Datejust, a platinum and diamond Day-Date for $164,300, and an Everose diamond Day-Date listed at $77,150.

Talk about upselling! From seven, to seventy seven, to $164K in one breath!

Tom replied expressing his willingness to be put on the waiting list. He also asked if he could stop by and have a little chat. An appointment was set and Tom showed up wearing his dad's Rolex Hulk. That was noticed, and it appeared that Tom was heading in the right direction. Unfortunately, the AD was unable to say how long it would take to source the watch of choice, or how long the wait list is, but Tom pointed out that the Hulk he was wearing was purchased from the same store in 2011. He also mentioned that his father, and mother are Rolex customers, and his dad's friend has been a customer for years – who has bought multiple solid gold Rolex watches.

The AD said that they could look up his dad's "profile" on their system, if he was able to provide proof of previous purchases. The kid went home and started searching for invoices, scanned them and sent them to the AD. The AD advised that unfortunately those sales would not count because while the invoices showed the correct name and address, the watches were purchased overseas, and that those could not be added to his 'customer profile'. Keen to establish a relationship on his own, while still 'piggybacking' on dad's profile, Tom expressed his interest in the Rolex Milgauss, and was placed on the waiting list.

In the meantime, he also found two more invoices, one for a Rolex Submariner, and also mum's non-Rolex watch. The AD promised to add those two purchases to dad's profile.

At this point in time, Tom feels that his chances are "fairly decent". He was clear: neither he, nor his family members, nor even his family friends are 'flippers'. They not just keep their Rolexes in their possession, but dad also uses his Submariner as a divers watch. They are loyal Rolex owners, not the kind of people who will flip the watch for quick profit. With two watches on his waiting list, Tom is confident that it is just a matter of time before the Rolex AD will call with good news. He told me in all honesty, that so far, the whole buying experience is a positive one; with the AD responding professionally, courteously, and promptly to his emails.

Amazing.

The reason for sharing this story with you is obvious: the world of luxury watches is changing fast and the new generation of buyers is more than happy to embrace 'the new normal'. You surely remember the days when Rolex was the most common watch out there; when Hong Kong dealers were selling Rolex at 30% below recommended retail price, or even the 1970s when dealers were flooded with steel Daytona’s nobody wanted. Those days are long gone. If you think you will score a steel Rolex without building your 'profile', then you are just kidding yourself. The profiling, waiting lists and preferential deals are real, and like it or not, you will be either in – or out.

Εμένα δε μου ζήτησε κανείς εκκαθαριστικό πάντως. Το θέμα είναι αν αυτό που ψάχνεις υπάρχει, για να στο δώσουν. Και τα τελευταία χρόνια δεν υπάρχει. Τουλάχιστον όχι με τον τρόπο που μπαίνεις οπουδήποτε αλλού και ψωνίζεις κάτι.
