On October 3, 1962, astronaut Walter "Wally" Schirra wore his personal Omega Speedmaster onboard the Sigma 7 spacecraft that orbited the earth six times. It marked the start of a long history of space exploration for the Speedmaster Chronograph, which in 1965 became the official certified watch for all NASA manned missions.
The case, in 18kt Sedna gold, measures 39.7mm. It has a brown polished ceramic bezel ring and a matt chromium nitride tachymeter scale. The crystal is an AR-coated sapphire, and it is water resistant to 50 meters. The caseback features the iconic Seahorse medallion and the engraving "The First Omega In Space, October 3, 1962."
Movement is the Swiss manual-wind Omega caliber 1861 with 18 jewels, 21,600 vph and a power reserve of 48 hours. It features a rhodium-plated finish.
The dial is silver opaline with brown PVD subdials. It has applied indices and ring, and the hands are 18kt Sedna gold.
It comes on a brown leather strap with beige stitching and a deployant.
