Υπαρχουν πολλές θεωρίες για τον λόγο, κάποιους από αυτούς, θα βρείς εδώ, όπως και σε παρόμοια sites.

Μερικοί περιληπτικά.

• Αμόρφωτος πληθυσμός στον μεσαίωνα, που τα καμπαναριά είχαν το ρολόι της πολης, και ήταν ευκολότερο το ΙΙΙΙ.

• Ευκολότερη παραγωγή Ι, αντί V,  X, στα τότε σιδηρουργεία.

• Βέλτιστο οπτικό αποτέλεσμα σε συμμετρία με το VIII

• Παλαιότερη γραφή σαν IIII αντί IV

Αλλά το BIG BEN είναι με IV.
