We come into contact with many magnetic fields in everyday life. The obvious place to find them is around magnetic objects—such as fridge doors and children’s toys. But you will also find magnets used in various types of locks and fastenings; handbags, glasses cases, and cupboards, for example.
Magnetic fields are generated wherever there is electricity. And that means that the strength of the magnetic field depends on the amount of electricity present. Cell phones or cordless handsets, for example, usually produce rather weak magnetic fields. Old electronics—tube television sets for example—are somewhat more problematic for your watch. Speakers, such as those in laptops, should also be kept away from your watch. And of course: the effect of a magnetic field becomes stronger the closer your watch gets to it.
What happens when a watch has been magnetized?
The magnetization of a mechanical watch affects the escapement and balance spring. Both are essential for a watch’s accuracy; the balance spring stores the energy generated by winding, while the escapement makes sure that this energy is relayed at the right pace to the hands. It does not only force the balance spring to release its energy slowly, it also transforms the energy into a controlled movement—which can be heard as the even ticking sound of your watch.
The balance spring in NOMOS timepieces is made from Nivarox, which is an alloy of iron, nickel, chrome, titanium, and beryllium. According to the applicable German industrial norm (DIN 8309), this material is antimagnetic.
What is the effect of this magnetism?
Magnetization stops the escapement and balance spring working smoothly, as the movements of the balance become irregular. The effect is usually for the watch to suddenly and significantly gain time. But losing time or stopping all together can also happen.
So the best approach is simply to keep your watch away from strong magnetic fields. And even if they do encounter your timepiece on occasion, it’s easy to have it demagnetized by your retailer. It doesn’t take long or cost very much.

Η αλήθεια είναι βέβαια πως από το λίγο που το είχα ψάξει, έχω την εντύπωση ότι Nivarox διαθέτουν μόνο οι παλιοί alpha μηχανισμοί και όχι οι καινούργιοι inhouse DUW...Οπότε έστειλα νέο αίτημα και περιμένω.
Για να είμαι ειλικρινής, ούτε η Tudor διαφημίζει κάποια αντιμαγνητικη προστασία πέρα από τη βασική (σε αντίθεση με τη longines ας πούμε στο spirit pilot. Απλώς για Tudor δεν έχω βρει αναφορές μαγνωτισμων όπως στα Nomos..
