An Antiques Roadshow guest was almost lost for words when she found out how much an old watch that her dad bought decades ago for a mere £20 was worth.

In the latest episode of the BBC series, viewers were transported to Powis Castle in Wales, where a woman presented an enormous pilot’s watch that was used during the Second World War.

This particular clock face was manufactured for the German armed forces, having been crafted at the A. Lange & Söhne factory in Glashütte, Germany, which was destroyed by Russian bombs on the last day of war in May 1945.

The expert who examined the watch explained that it had been painted using the radioactive material radium, resulting in him issuing a warning to seek assistance if she ever wanted to dismantle it herself.

After emphasising how much a Lange watch would be worth due to their rarity, he opened up the timepiece and – lo and behold – it was made by the company in question.

Outlining to the woman and the audience watching that the identity of the manufacturer ‘makes a big difference price-wise’, the woman remarked how ‘lucky’ her dad was to have happened upon the watch.

He got it in Weymouth in a government surplus shop in the early 70s. He was always poking around old shops, antique shops in government surplus places,’ she said, revealing that her father only paid £20 for it, much to the expert’s shock.

‘Is that a good buy?’ she asked, as he replied: ‘Pretty good buy! I think I would have been delighted to have paid £20 for that then.’

Having built up the suspense, he finally revealed how much the watch would be worth on the market today, as it would be coveted by collectors, putting forward a figure of between £8,000 and £10,000
