« στις: Φεβρουάριος 08, 2023, 17:37:05 μμ »
           SMITHS PRS-25 EVEREST Gilt    REVIEW

1. Introduction
As I was interested in an automatic SMITHS watch, I found the PRS-25 the best choice.
I have allready a PRS-29 and a PRS-36, both handwound. The quality is above average!

The name EVEREST:
Sir Edmond Hillary and his Sherpa, Thensing Norgay,
first climbed the Mount Everest, 8848m on 29 May 1953.

On his wrist he had a Smiths De Luxe watch, altough not the same dial as the PRS-25.
His Nepalese friend and Sherpa also had one.
Smiths was the official sponsor.

READ CAREFULLY THIS ARTICLE! Smiths was on the Everest summit, NOT Rolex …

https://www.outdoorjournal.com/featured/opinion-editorial/rolex-vs-smiths-which-watch-summited-everest-in-1953-putting-a-controversy-to-rest/

This Rolex (1016) was the example for the Smithe PRS-25.
All this information is from (in my opinion) credible internet sites.

2. Numeric data
Length: 43,5 mm
Large: (without) crown (36mm) 39,3 mm
Thickness: 11,3 mm
Lugs: 20mm
Weight: case 43g   with Bracelet 140 g
WR: 100
Ant-Magnetic: 20,000 A/m

3. Dial
The appearance of a watch is one of the things that matter the most, we all know. And then the dial is the most important!

It shows “SMITHS De Luxe” logo, the Smiths design logo, the “EVEREST” logo.
The colour “Satin Black” but is almost charcoal black. Indexes, the 3-6-9 and the 12 triangle are white (Superluminova XI-C3).
The analog dial has a hour,  minute and seconds hand, Mercedes style. The minutes indexes are 2 mm stripes.

But the most important feature of this “gilt” version: Hands, minutes and logo’s are in gilt colour,

what makes the watch really extraordinary! It shines beautiful in the sun or artificial light!

So, the dial is extremely good readable, the most important thing of a watch!

4. Case
Material: 316 L stainless steel. Top is brushed, sides are polished.

The  shape is standard round, the bezel is integrated, nice to see drilled lugs.
The screwed down crown is big enough to confortable wind or to set the time.
The Smiths logo is engraved on it.
The (screwed) backside shows the Brand and type, the Serial Number and WR 100 metres, all engraved.
The crystal is sapphire glass, Hi dome. Dimensions: 30,4 mm x 2,5 mm thick.
Anti-reflective coating on the underside.

4b. Bracelet
The bracelet is composed of solid steel, screwed links, solid end links and a clasp with the SMITHS Logo.
High quality, in one word.

It feels heavy!

5. Calibre and features
The calibre is the Miyota 9039, 24 jewels, automatic.
Feature: Possible handwinding and hacking seconds
https://reference.grail-watch.com/movement/miyota-9039/

28,800BPH (4 Hz)
Movt height: 3,9 mm
Power Reserve: 42 hours
Made in Japan.

The watch comes with a manual with all the necessary explanations, clear readable and in English.
It is a different version of the standard 9015 cal. : as there is NO date, the crown has only two positions:
1. Setting the time
2. Running position
There is no dead position between Posn 1. and 2.

Comparison with Seiko Cal. NH35 (Cal. 4R36)

https://calibercorner.com/seiko-nh35-vs-miyota-9015/

6. Price and availability
The price is not too high at my opinion: 325£ ( = 364€, rate on date 07Feb23)

“Time Factors” is a UK microbrand.
https://www.timefactors.com/products/smiths-everest-gilt-dial

The problem is: The website (to order) opens on sundays from 14.00Hrs, but closes after +/- 2 minutes!
So you have to be quick and prepared to fill out the required data…
He (Eddie Platts himself) closes after 200 orders, I think. Because he’s doing everything himself, paperwork, packing, mail, and sending … etc.
It is HARD to buy it online…,  only online!

Remark from Eddie Platts: "Regrettably, the popularity of the offerings has created this situation. Shopify only allows 7 days to take payment before the authority to take payment expires. I shouldn't take payment before the goods ship which is why the website is configured to close once 200 orders are received, which is the maximum we can ship in 7 days. These 7 days involve an 80 hour week, which at my age is somewhat challenging.
Eddie "

The watch came in a pouch of very good quality, giving very good protection.
Although it is not comfortable to travel with: cylinder shape, only space for one watch without storage place for another strap or so.

7. Conclusion
For this money, I have a decent watch of VERY GOOD quality.
The Miyota 9039 calibre is superb: 10 Sec/Day.
An equal valued watch of another brand goes easily between 500-800€.
As you look for 2nd hand ones, the price is that heigh!
The watch looks very nice and extraordinary, and has a remarkable readability,
it is an explorer style watch.
It has all the features that can be found on other more expensive watches.
The lume is excellent, above average!
It is  recommendable for everyone: men and women, sporty but also for dress moments.
For me, alltough the bracelet is of very good quality, it feels quiete heavy. I prefer leather strap, or in summertime a good quality Nato.
It is really a daily beater: strong, sapphire dial, good readable!
It is also just nice to have something different as the Seiko 5’s I love, and my Citizens and my Casio’s!
By now, the Smiths will be more on the wrist!

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Remark:
Smiths (Time Factors) produced also a Smiths “Everst Expedition” PRS-25W, what is more similar to the watch worn by Hillary.
Only, the original watch had a small second, as the PRS-25W has a central second,
because of the Cal. 9039.

Ανταλλάξατε καντράν από Seiko 5 ...

Το θέμα είναι πολύ τεχνικό.
Γι 'αυτό γράφω στα αγγλικά, OK?  ;)

I liked to change the dial/hands from a SNK371, to put them in a case from a SNKF63J.
The 20 minutes skala seemed nice to me as it could be in coincidence with the skala on the SNKF outer steady bezel

The problem is that the caliber in the SNKF is fitted in a bigger holding spacer.
Also: switching only the dial and the hands was not possible due to the bottom position af the day window.
To change the plastic holding spacer, you need to remove the day and date wheels, what is a difficult job for an amateur...  :(

BUT: the problem has been solved by @ @Revilles ! He made a SUPER job!
I can only recommend  Xristos: correct, fast en not expensive! And he made a waterproof test!  :-*

Here the pictures:

Το νεο μου ρολοι-reviews / William L 1985 CHRONO
« στις: Μάιος 08, 2021, 21:16:39 μμ »
REVIEW WILLIAMS L 1985 Chrono

1. History

Name: founder Guillaume Laidet, born 1985, France, inspired by the vintage chronograph of his grandfather.
He started his own company with watches at reasonable prices and tough good looking watches.

To have better resonance he took an “english” name: William L 1985.
Website story: https://uk.williaml1985.com/content/7-story

2. Arrival (1st impression)

The carboard package contained the pouch, and there in the watch and some additional papers.
Once the pouch is opened, the magnificent panda looks to you! Tough a nylon is still over the crystal to protect.

3. Description

CASE: 316L stainless steel polished and brushed
DIAMETER: 40 mm
THICKNESS: 13,1 mm
CRYSTAL: Ultra-resistant domed mineral with anti-reflective coating
WATER RESISTANCE: 5 ATM (50 meters)
DIAL: Panda,  with tachymeter scale, telemeter.
HANDS: Dauphine with Luminova treatment
INDEXES: Applied / Baton
MOVEMENT: Quartz Miyota 6S21
FUNCTIONS: Chronograph, date, small second, 60 minutes counter
STRAP: Mesh band with easy spring bars
LUG WIDTH: 20 mm
BUCKLE: 316L stainless steel ratchet
CROWN: engraved “WL”
PRICE: 189€ according to the website

The chronograph hand (centre one), once activated, makes 4 beats per second. This gives the feeling of an mechanical one. Nice!

The 40mm watch is just perfect to the wrist of the most of us. The crown is a bit hard to pull, but maybe because the watch is still new. The chrono pushbuttons have a nice vintage feeling, as the start like a mechanical calibre. The big seconds hand (chronograph hand) progresses with about 4 tics per second, as it looks like a mechanical chrono. Reset looks pretty as it turns smoothly clockwise to “12”. In darkness it is not perfectly visible, but to be serious, this is more watch for during daylight! Or as a dresswatch.

The particularity here is: this is one of the rare watches that have also a TELEMETER scala, beside the Tachymeter scala.

Use of the telemeter:

Example: Fire range of artillery.
Start the chronograph upon seeing the explosion of your artillery shell down range.
Stop the chronograph upon hearing the explosion.
The chronograph hand points to the approximate distance from you to where your shell has impacted. If 51 seconds have passed the telemeter value is 17, the shell impacted approximately 17km down range.
Example: Distance from lightning strike.
Start the chronograph upon seeing a strike of lightning.
Stop the chronograph upon hearing thunder.
If 21 seconds have passed the telemeter value is 7, the lightning strike was approximately 7km from where you are.

In general, use a telemeter by following this process:
Start the chronograph upon seeing an event.
Stop the chronograph upon hearing the event.
The telemeter value at which the second hand points approximates the distance between your position and the event, in the stated units of the telemeter.

4. Remarks:

It is a very nice chrono-watch. Especially the white dial with 2 black subdials – Panda !
As two subdials look more vintage then three subdials, this was a main criterium to me.

Also, a reliable quartz movement was important, as mechanical chronographs need more, and also more expensive maintenance. It is part of my (not expensive) collection and so, it is not worn every day. I pull the crown and the battery is set to off. Restart is simple as there is no date, just set the time.

To make it more comfortable (to me), I changed the mesh strap into a classic oak colour leather strap. And sometimes a black leather rallyestrap.

The watch comes with a nice synthetic grey leather pouch. There is place for 1 watch and 2 separate straps.
I can fit another watch even! This is a very useful accessoire.
MUCH better then all those boxes that fill the cupboard for the rest of there life…

5. Other “panda” chronographs:

LIP and Williams (miyota quartz)

Vapaus and Newmark (Seiko Quartz)

Mechanical Seiko and Zodiac

6. Conclusion:

A watch much value for money.
Apart for the “cheap” mesh strap, this watch fits me perfectly, and with another strap, you can personalize your watch as you want. Also a black or beige rally strap would nicely fit, and seems quiet good as dresswatch.

It looks brillant and with 40 mm, it is just OK for the most of us. And last but not least: you don’t spend to much money, so there is still “spare” for other watches/straps/accesoires!

As it is a French company it is EU and maybe this is also important to many customers! Of course, it is probably assembled in the PRC but the final quality check is in France. And Japanese Miyota in 100% OK!

If you like a panda-chrono in your collection to wear only from timr to time, a quartz one is  recommendable to me. This one fits the requirements!

Σας ευχαριστούμε για το ενδιαφέρον σας!  Thanks!

Το νεο μου ρολοι-reviews / ETNA ALARM with light - vintage
« στις: Απρίλιος 10, 2021, 21:15:06 μμ »
ETNA LIGH-JET     ALARM WATCH with LIGHT

(... and some other information about mechanical alarm wristwatches...!)
  (listing is NOT complete!)

My Etna Ligh-Jet:

Bought from @watchman recently. Runs very accurate and alarm works perfect!
I only changed the strap, wich was difficult as the space between case and lugs is very tight.
Only the original, light bowed springbars could be used and goes now perfect with grey natostrap.

History and description:

1971: Brevinex S.A. of Geneva introduces the ETNA Light-Jet.
A mechanical watch with mechanical alarm function,
and electric lightning by two power cells in the strap.

Steel case with two crowns, white dial with “12” and batton hour indexes.
Central second in blue and additional hand for alarm setting.
Alarm dial 15 Min. intervals
Seconds: 1/5 Sec dial
Inscriptions:
ETNA
ligh-jet
17 jewels
incabloc

Particularity:

1. This Etna Alarm has no alarm dial from 02,30 until 03,30 Hr….
There is a ETNA watch with date at 3 o’clock, with window just in place of the missing alarm indexes! Maybe they used only 1 kind of dial and just stamped a hole for the date version.
2. The Etna Alarm has written on the dial “LIGH-JET”, but the Etna Date with Light (No Alarm) has LIGHT-JET.
Strange difference between LIGH and LIGHT, as “ligh” doesn’t exist as word…
… Mistake in printing the dial? ? …

Technical information

Case: steel
Crystal: mineral crystal
Crown: 1 (lower) = winding 1st click, and setting the clock 2nd click
2 (upper)= winding 1st click and setting the alarm 2nd click.
Once the alarm did ring (+/- 15 Sec.), the alarm barrel has to be wind up again.

Dimensions:

Diameter case 36mm without crowns, dial is 27mm
Lug to lug 39mm
Lug width 18mm
Thickness 11mm

Light: Inside the case there is a micro bulb lamp, the light is initiated by a pushbutton on the (original) bracelet. Insede the bracelet, there are two batteries integrated.

To see the light working, switch on bracelet, (2 x 1,5V batteries incorporated in the bracelet):

The calibre  Cal. AS1930

The Calibre AS1475 is an alarm movement from A. Schild, Switzerland, produced in various versions from 1954 through 1974. This calibre was a double barrel hand-wound movement, beating at 18,000 A/h. In 1956, Cal. AS1568 was introduced, adding a date display.
These calibers were replaced in 1970:
An up-rated 21,600 A/h versions: AS1930 and AS1931, without and with date respectively.

To hear the sound of a AS1930 Cal. (here Oris):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sn_MHUKXg88

Other brands with the famous AS1930 calibre

This AS calibre, (sometimes elaborated) is widely used in the alarmwatches of today:

Tissot, Benrus, Bulova, Girard-Perregaux Memostar, Breguet, Delbana, Doxa, Helbros, Jenny Sealab Alarm, Maurice LaCroix, Revue Thommen-(New), Oris, Wittnauer, Etc…

And copied by others! Citizen, Poljot (= Cal.2612.1) , Seconda …

Other famous alarm watches with different Cal. :

The iconic alarm watch = VULCAIN Cricket.

Since 1951, Vulcain with Cal.120; the president’s watch (Eisenhower, Trumann, Nixon, Johnson)

The Vulcain Cricket restarted some years ago, but success is not yet assured.
(Also Revue-Thommen used Vulcain Cal.120, named Revue RT80.)
But Vulcain used also the AS1931 in some series!

The  Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox from 1951 and further are different: they make their own Cal. :

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memovox

Also Omega Memomatic had an automatic alarm Cal.980, wich came actualy from Lemania.

Jura Watch Co, brand Cimier,  with Ronda1223 handwound

And …of course, …  Seiko Bell Matic, Cal 4006 (17j day-date) and 4005 (27j-date only)

4. Recognizable differences seen in the pictures:

Remark: Owners who both own SLA017 and GWF or even all 3 can give mor detailed info about the differences.

Seize of the battons indexes: The battons from the GWF seem more large, but the metal line around the battons is larger on the 017 then the 62MAS and GWF.

Seize of the bezel: The original bezel 62MAS (and the bezel from the SLA017?) look smaller then the one on the GWF.

Seize of the hands: The hands on the GWF look more large then on the Seiko SLA017.

The date cyphers look a bit more bold on the SEIKO 62MAS vintage.

5. Conclusion:
The GWF62MAS is a remake watch that matches VERY well with the original. It looks the same. (apart from the info on the dial)
The case is solid, drilled lugs and stainless steel, as the cover as well. The screwed crown is massive and solid.
The domed crystal is brillant, even when it is not sapphire.
The calibre NH35A is well known and consistently good in quality and performance.
For the money, it is a perfect alternative to the SLA017, what is of course still another (EXPENSIVE) category,
because not everyone can or likes to spend 3800€ for the SLA017, even when it is a Limited Edition.

It is by now, one of my most favorite watches!  ;)

Το νεο μου ρολοι-reviews / SKMEI-1220
« στις: Ιανουάριος 16, 2021, 18:48:50 μμ »
Το νεο μου ρολοι-review  είναι στα αγγλικά με συγχωρείτε ...
Sorry, it is to difficult to write a complex text in Greek, and English isn't also my home language!
So, be patient...

----------------------------------
SKMEI - 1220    REVIEW

1. Introduction
As I was interested in a Seiko Analog-Digital watch H-357, worn by Roger Moore in "James Bond - For your eyes only" ... There was one alternative: the Casio AQ-230A ...
And for this Casio there is also an alternative: The SKMEI 1220 ...
On the other side, the tank case is not very popular, but anyway, most brands have one in their productionline, and it is nice to have one in your collection!

2. Numeric data
Length: 37mm
Large: (without) pushbuttons (34mm) 39mm
Thickness: 12mm
Lugs: 20mm
Weight: case 43g   Bracelet 60g

3. Dial
The appearance of a watch is one of the things that matter the most, we all know. And then the dial is the most important!
The colour is almost black. But not charcoal black, it looks more like a shine of grey-dark silver.
The square shape window is 24mmx24mm. the analog dial however is 24x20mm.
The digital window is 4mm by 17mm large.
The analog dial has a hour and minute hand, no seconds. The indexes are surprisingly set on the dial as steel battons, the minutes indexes are printed in a pale white colour.
In the upper half, we see the "SKMEI" logo, down, there is the "WR30M" indication, both in pale white print.
The digital window is big enough to clearly read the figures. Left side is printed "MODE" for the B-button, and on the right side "RESET" for the C-button.
Due to the EL-backlight, the visibility in darkness is clear and has a blue colour.

4. Case
The tank shape is widly know among watch aficionados! Other examples are: Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, Cartier Tank, Peugeot, Seiko, Citizen, ... etc
The case is made of aluminium (!), but has of course a steel-chrome layer. It looks a bit too shiny, as it is not really stainless polished steel.
Four pushbuttons, 2 on each side, to control the features. They are quiet large pronounced, but do not hamper the mouvement of the wrist; you can almost not accidently push a button with the wrist. However, I would like to have them a bit shorter. But due to the construction, -they need a certain length- to push the levers inside the case.
The backside shows "SKMEI 1220", a logo with "3ATM", "Japan Battery CR2016", and "Water resistant 3ATM". The cover is fixed with 4 Philips screws and has a rubber joint inlay.
4 screws hold the backcover in place. Inside of the cover there is a round shaped plastic. By replacing the cover, this platic should be positioned over a little spring, coming out of the calibre. Probably this has some function with the beep sound (as known by G-Shocks)?. During the screwing down the plate, some pression should be made to keep the plate in place.
The crystal is just (hardened?) glass. I would be careful, not to smash it.

4b. Bracelet
For the money, you cannot complain to much. But the quality is quiet poor. During removing the plastic protection film, the small springbar between the bracelet and the locksystem jumped out and away out of my hands ..., but I found it on the floor! It is fixed again, but I will not use this bracelet.

5. Calibre and features
The calibre is obviously known as "1220". The accuracy has been measured over one month: TWO seconds difference! Amazing!    Battery: CR2016.
First, and most visible feature: the analog time. Adjustment via button D, upper right, and the hands move, but ONLY clockwise. One push is 1/3 minute forward. keep pushed is fast forward. Pay attention to stop in time, if not, it needs to turn another 12 Hrs!
A   D
   O
B   C
Via button B, you can switch between:
Normal Mode
Date Mode
Alarm Mode
Second Time Mode
Chronograph Mode
Via button C, you activate the respective Mode
And the A button gives the EL backlight for 3 seconds.
The watch comes with a manual with all the necessary explanations, clear readable and in English.
The calibre can easily removed from the case, using tweezers. I don't have for now taken apart the calibre, maybe another time. To replace the calibre, you can put it upside or downside, there is no North or South position, the 4 pushbuttons are symmetrically placed.

6. Price and availability
The price is ridiculous low... I have paid 6.70€ for the watch.
As I bought 2 watches = 13.40€ and 3.73€ postage = 17.13€ for two watches.
There are many offers on the internet, just chose the cheapest one!
They came in an cushened enveloppe, but good enough to protect, no box no registration papers. There was a "guarantee" paper added ...

7. Conclusion
For this money, you can't go wrong! Some people pay this amount to replace a battery!
The watch looks nice and decent, and does not look cheap. It can easly be used as a dresswatch and the accuracy is remarkable. It has all the features that can be found on other more expensive watches. The lightfunction is above average!
It is  recommendable for everyone: men, women and  children for daily use. And ...  replace the bracelet! Be also aware of water at my opinion and don't use it during heavy and rough work! But for example, on the bedside table as alarm watch with decent lightfunction it is perfect!
It is also just nice to have something different on the wrist from time to time. And the money you save, can be used to buy another decent watch!

Το νεο μου ρολοι-reviews / Special review: Seiko SNK805K1
« στις: Δεκέμβριος 26, 2020, 10:14:46 πμ »
a special review of the SEIKO SNK805K1:

My grandson (13 years) received from me a Seiko5 (SNK805K1) due to his entrance into the gymnasium, 1 year ago.
He was very happy and careful about the watch.
Last week... he dropped it on the floor ...
The watch stopped working and the rotor didn't move anymore.

My only advice (in distance !) was to bring it to a watchmaker to open it and to see what he can do.
If the calibre was broken, i would send him a new 7S26 calibre.
Some days ago, my daughter called me and the watch was not yet been at the watchmaker .. but it worked again !

What happened:

The boy forgot the broken watch in the pocket of his trousers and ... went in the laundry machine ...
And after the "threatment" they found the watch ...
...the watch worked with no issues !!
So: The calibre 7S26 is realy strong and the case SNK is with "30m waterproof" resistant to survive in a washingmachine !!!

SEIKO RULES !   (most of the time)

And he had a realy nice Christmas 2020!   ... and the watch is clean ...

D.I.Y / Synthetic NATO straps ( Κοντυμα )
« στις: Σεπτέμβριος 01, 2020, 11:26:56 πμ »
Nέα Λουράκια from "Cheapestnatostraps" and I need some to adapt and shorten them (συντομεύστε)

I looked for 19mm straps and some straps to replace the metalband from my Orient Mako II and leatherband from my Smiths PRS36:
To heavy/hot in summer.

Due to corona issues the delivery took about 6 weeks! (from Sweden)

3 of them need to be shorten! Later more about this...
