A. LANGE & SOHNE
The German watchmaker Ferdinand Adolph Lange founded A Lange and Sohne in Glashutte, German, in 1845 after apprenticing with master watchmaker Johann Christian Friedrich Gutkaes in Dresden. This first Glashutte workshop was staffed by stonemasons, farmers, and others with little to no technical skill but, under Lange's leadership, the company still produced precision pocket watches and helped start the Glashutte watchmaking industry. The company's main facility was destroyed in the final days of World War II and Soviet expropriation removed the name of A Lange and Sohne from the dials of watches in 1948. Walter Lange, great-grandson of the company's found, was forced to wait until 1990 and the fall of the Berlin Wall to restore his ancestor's company to its former glory. He, along with watch industry executive Gunter Blumlein, has now recreated one of the great German watch brands, carrying its illustrious lineage into the 21st century. The watch lines carried by A Lange and Sohne -- the Zeitwerk, the Richard Lange family, the 1815 line, Saxonia, and Lange 1 --are made from gold and platinum, with rare exception, and the movement of each watch is developed, produced, and assembled by the company. In addition, each movement is made from "German silver," an alloy of copper and nickel that gives the piece a very particular sheen and color.

Cartier, as part of the Richemont group, could easily refer to themselves as jewelers first, and watchmakers second. This can be attributed to their large line of rings, necklaces, purses and charms that carry the same characteristics as their watches: elegant and refined without being over-the-top. Don't get the wrong idea, however, because while Cartier watches are stylish, their functionality is akin to the caliber of other leading brands today.

IWC
The International Watch Company was established in 1868 by Florentine Ariosto Jones, an American engineer and watchmaker, in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, with the assistance of manufacturer and industrialist Johann Heinrich Moser. Its location in Schaffhausen makes the IWC the only major Swiss watchmaker to set up shop in eastern Switzerland.
Their Ingenieur model of watches -- a design based on the classic IWC Pilot Watch, a line made for the British Royal Air Force in the 1940s -- are specifically designed to counter the effects of external magnetic fields, making them ideal for pilots. The company's Portuguese line is designed for the avid boater; the Da Vinci family of watches pays tribute to the Renaissance inventor; the classic lines of the Portofino line recall Hollywood of the 1950s and movie stars' love for the Italian fishing village; and the IWC's Aquatimer series, along with their support of the Charles Darwin Foundation's preservation efforts, shows the company's history and respect for the diving community.

JAEGER-LECOULTRE
Part of the Richemont group's Haute Horlogerie division, Jaeger Le Coultre is a fully fledged Manufacture, whose in-house movements grace not only their own prestigious timepieces, but often lend their prestige to other high-end brands. Antoine LeCoultre founded the brand in 1833 but it was not until 1866 that his son would transform the workshop into a manufacture. Paris watchmaker Edmond Jaeger did not join his name to the company until 1903. He brought with him ultra-thin movement calibers as well as a prestigious customer for the movements, Cartier. Today, the company is well known for a number of achievements, including the Reverso, the Memovox automatic alarm watch and the Atmos clock.

MONTBLANC
Montblanc, which was established as a manufacturer of writing instruments in 1906, introduced their first line of Meisterstuck watches in 1997 at the Salon International de Haute Horlogerie. Designed for an energetic lifestyle in robust stainless steel cases, the Sport line was unveiled in 2000.
In a move by Richemont, the owner of Montblanc, the company was annexed in 2006 with Minerva, a watchmaker established in 1858, to create Montblanc Villeret. Shortly after this merger, the company proudly introduced the MB R100, their first caliber manufactured in-house, at the 2008 SIHH. The new division truly made its mark on the haute horlogerie world in 2010 with the introduction of their limited edition Metamorphosis timepiece, a wristwatch that converts between two faces, one a classical dial and the other a chronograph, at the push of a button. Like Montblanc's other watches, the Metamorphosis combines an elegant design and aesthetics while utilizing a creative approach to watchmaking.

PANERAI
Officine Panerai Firenze started suppling the Italian Navy with precision instruments such as calculators, fuses for torpedos, depth meters, and compasses in the 19th century. The demand for an extremely water proof time piece with luminous hands for legibility, led them into the world of horology. Over the past 145 years, the company has evolved from basic blunt instruments into one of the most sought after brands.
Panerai was very quiet through the second half of the 20th century, until the Richemont Group (then Vendome Luxury Group) bought the company in 1997. Richemont relaunched many of the models and they were an immediate international hit.

Θα μου συγχωρηθεί, αν με την ευκαιρία, κάνω ένα γενικότερης φύσης σχόλιο μιας και φαίνεται ότι το πράγμα πάει κατά δι@όλου;
Θα ήθελα να επισημάνω ότι την προηγούμενη φορά που καταστράφηκε η ελβετική ωρολογοβιομηχανία, αυτό δεν έγινε επειδή (δήθεν) εμφανίσθηκαν στο προσκήνιο τα φθηνά quartz ρολόγια, αλλά εξαιτίας μιας παγκόσμιας οικονομικής κρίσης (πετρελαικό κραχ), η οποία μάλιστα ήταν και πολύ μικρότερη από την διαφαινόμενη μπροστά μας.

Το μεγαλο προβλημα θα υπαρξει,αν αρχισει να εχει μεγαλη δυσκολια η Rolex.Το λεω αυτο γιατι παραγει μονη της,ενα μεγαλο αριθμο ρολογιων και αποτελει κατ'εμε ,το βαρομετρο της ελβετικης ωρολογοποιιας

Quite hard to imagine but the Cartier Santos has been around for many, many years. Ever since it’s first appearance in 1904 it has also hardly changed.
Something quite unique in the watch world. So when a new model is presented you can expect many opinions.
Let’s have a look at the redefined Cartier Santos models.

Cartier Santos
With the new Cartier Santos or ‘Santos de Cartier Watch’ as the model is officially called the update has been mostly done in comfort and proportions. Keeping the aesthetics of the Santos intact mostly. The square shape of the watch remained unchanged which also goes for the remarkable screws in the bezel and bracelet. However the biggest visual change is the shape of the bezel which now connects fluently into the bracelet.

Less visible are the changes that have been made for comfort and ease of use. As mentioned earlier the magic words during the SIHH 2018 were ‘interchangeable straps’.
Many brands presented this and so did Cartier with their ‘QuickSwitch’ system. Doing this will prevent damage to the case while changing straps for those who wish to do that. Instead of using a pushpin tool to take the bracelet off the simple push of a button does the trick now. Quite convenient for those who like to change the look of their watch.

SmartLink system for easy adjustment of the bracelet
Not only the connection of the strap to the case was updated with a quick release system. When buying a watch with a metal bracelet these hardly ever come in the right size. Where you normally would have to ask a watchmaker to shorten or lengthen it. The new metal bracelet on the Santos comes with a convenient ‘SmartLink’ system which makes it easy to change the length at just a push of a button. On the back side of selected links there is a little button which releases the bar. This way you can easily change the amount of links without damage. Where the previous model featured a hidden clasp, the new version comes with a logo on the clasp and little pushers to open it.

Different Variations
The new Cartier Santos comes in 2 sizes which both offer the same material combinations. Available in Medium and Large these models have been updated to a more modern sizing. Where the medium version measures 35.1mm the larger model is just under 40mm. Thanks to the screw-down design, the new Santos de Cartier offers water resistance up to 100 meters with a minimal case thickness. Both sizes come with an automatic caliber which features anti-magnetic as well as a shield made from a paramagnetic alloy. This makes the calibre effectively resistant to the powerful magnetic fields a watch may be exposed to in everyday life.

Depending on your taste you can choose between either stainless steel or variations with, or in full gold. In total 5 different executions will be made available later this year. We’ll have a look at the skeletonized version at a later moment. Each watch comes with an additional strap of choice to change the look to your own liking. With a wide selection of calf and alligator straps there should always be something to match your taste.

All combined it’s great to see the new Cartier Santos and it suer looks good. And although a quick release system to change links isn’t something you will use a lot it sure is convenient. The same goes for the ‘QuickSwitch’ system which will be useful on a more regular basis. Something to get used to is the new bezel design. Where it works amazingly well on a leather strap I have to get used to the looks on an metal bracelet. This is mostly due to the different finishes as the bezel is polished where the bracelet has a brushed surface.

The Swiss watchmaker Richemont has destroyed nearly €500m (£437m) of its designer timepieces over the past two years to avoid them being sold at knockdown prices.

Richemont is mostly invested in high-end luxury brands whose businesses rely on steady relationships with high-income regular buyers of luxury goods. With that said, two of Richemont’s largest brands (Cartier & Montblanc) indeed serve the high-end luxury market but also have a range of more mainstream luxury products intended for mainstream consumption. I state this in order explain what part of the luxury goods market Richemont is most keenly interested in. Richemont also indicates that 40% of its sales come from Asia (mostly the Far East) with Europe being its second largest market accounting for 27% of sales. The United States interestingly only accounts for 16% of sales. To put that into context, the country of Japan alone accounts for 6% of Richemont sales.
