BUND: the BUND variant is the only one to be officially issued by a military service ("BUND" is short for "Bundeswehr" -- the German Federal Defense Force). the BUND dial does not have any special dial printing beyond that found on the "baseline" configuration noted above. however, the caseback DOES have "BUND" and an appropriate NSN engraving. there are two (2) NSNs found on the BUND variant: the initial NSN is 6645-12-182-1763, and the second one is 6645-12-194-8642. some examples are "double-struck" meaning the initial NSN is lined-out, and the second NSN added. presumably this occurred at some maintenance event during it's lifetime, a sure sign that such a double-struck example actually saw service! the BUND-issued variant DOES NOT have the "7177" ref# engraving on the caseback. notably, the second NSN is shared with the BUND-issued variants manufactured by Arctos and Tengler, which are not covered in this article.

As you can see the dial is marked Marina Militare and the water resistance inscription changed from 200 to 500mt. If you check the dial with a magnifying glass you can still see the original Citizen inscription.

DPW was an italian company founded in 1979 and based in Genova. Before going into Chapter 11 DPW produced sport and diver watches. It bought cases from Candino, Breitling and Eberhard and sold watches with customized dials (very often in military PXs). The movement of this sample is a non-hacking, gold finished ETA 2824 (sometimes hacking ETA were mounted) and the case is the same of the Beuchat 1000, famous for being assigned to plngeur of the french Marine Nationale (Ushuaia and Abyss models had this case too) and the Candino 1000. These watches should have been used in the 1985-1995 period. Here is the backside:

The Benrus military watch is a precision timer and a utilitarian piece of equipment coming from Benrus. This company is a known watch maker and was very active in the watch market in the 1920s and the 1930s. The watches of the company are sold for the civilians, but most of its efforts have been focused on the needs of the military sector; this was especially true during the WWII years. This was the time of great growth for the company as Benrus was tasked to produce items that can be used by the military. The watch company maintained top secret government assignments and the company produced timing devices that can be used in bombs and other weapon applications.
The Benrus military watches came in different types as well.
One good type of the Benrus military watch was the Benrus Type I Class A dive watch. This specific watch was used by the members of the UDT-Seal Green Berets and the Special Forces during the latter part of the Vietnam War. This watch was known as the ultimate in military dive watches. This Type I watch from Benrus was a Class A model meaning that this belongs to the top class of military watches. The appearance of the watch’ dial and some of its designs are borrowed from Rolex and the watch did away with any writings and logos thus making the watch more legible. The reliability of the Benrus military watch Type- II Class- A has led to the development of other types of watches. Examples of these watches include the Type II Class A and the Type II Class B. The latter type is different since it featured the 12/24 hour dial; this was also used by the members of the Armed Forces who didn’t participate in special operations.

Glycine had set out to design a special watch for pilots – and with its many unique features the Airman had reached that goal with great success. During the Vietnam War many U.S. pilots started to purchase and use the Airman instead of using what they were issued by the Military.

In 1975 the West German Bundeswehr Kampfschwimmers (German Navy Combat divers) began to be issued a new dive watch – the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms “3H” model – and continued to use this model into the early 1980s. This particular Blancpain model was for military contract only, and never available for civilian purchase. Though it bears a striking similarity to the Squale branded models from the same era there are many differences to note, making the Blancpain “Bund” unique.
The Blancpain stainless steel case measures 48mm X 42mm X 15mm, a 20mm lug width, and features the crown at the 4 o’clock position – conceivably for comfort during rigorous activities. The dial bears a 3H symbol – indicating the use of Tritium, the radioactive isotope of Hydrogen, on the dial, hands and bezel indice. With the screwdown crown, screw caseback, heavy stainless steel case, and thick mineral glass crystal, the watch is water resistant to 200 meters.
Beneath the caseback is the Caliber 2873 Rayville signed 25 jewel, non-hacking, automatic movement. The Caliber 2873 features a quickset date and sweep center seconds ; perhaps unimpressive, but very sturdy to meet the rigorous requirements of a military dive watch.

During the 1970s the Israeli Defence Force’s (IDF) elite Naval Commando unit, Shayetet 13, were issued the Etena-Matic KonTiki Super dive watch. Designated and trained to conduct naval raids and underwater special warfare missions, Shayetet 13 also is an elite Counter-Terror unit which specializes in covert ops deep within enemy territory. S-13 distinguished themselves during the 1973 Yom Kippur War by finding and destroying several Egyptian torpedo boats with limpet mines, clearing the way for an Israeli armored force landing in Egypt the next day.

In the late 1990s the Marine Nationale / French Navy began to issue the Casio G-Shock, model DW-9000, to members of the five Commando groups under the command of COFUSCO (Commandement des Fusiliers Marins Commandos). These are the French Navy Commando groups:
Commando de Pefentenyo – responsible for reconnaissance (and resembling the US Marine Force Reconnaissance).
Commando Jaubert and Commando Trepel – responsible for attacks at sea (such as drilling platforms), exfiltration, and close quarters combat at sea.
Commando de Montfort – specializes in remote neutralizatoin (snipers / marksmen) and support ; within this framework is heavy materials (mortars, anti-tank, etc) and as well as means of designation and lighting for control of support airfire or terrestrial artillery.
Commando Hubert – are those commandos responsible for the role of combat swimmers / underwater actions.

The Canadian Government approached Marathon Watch Company to manufacture a more robust watch for their Search and Rescue Technicians. They requested a watch which could withstand the rigors of work in the most hostile of environments, including Artic conditions. Marathon subsequently contacted the owner of County Comm, Nick, with the required specifications. The goal was to produce a watch which could meet these specs with as low a failure rate as possible and which could provide legibility and ease of use. Nick contacted Bob, a SAR diver and owner of the Military Watch Resource (MWR), and Jim M., a government machinist, to help with the development of these watches. Several prototypes (built by Jim M.) were created and tested in a number of severe conditions, which included SAR diving, rappelling, shooting, and climbing. Members of MWR were invited to submit input and refinements, and consequently, the term “Marathon SAR” was coined on the MWR Forum. Marathon has continued to refer to the watch simply as: “Watch, Wrist, Diver, 30ATM“. The first of these watches were delivered to the Canadian Ministry of Defense on 11/16/01.

The IWC Ocean Bund Diver’s Watch
In 1980 the German Navy (BUND), made an order to VDO
(Vereinigte Deuta OTA) to develop and deliver new divers
watches. VDO, a German company founded by Adolf
Schindling, produced tachometers and measuring instruments
for the automobile and aviation industry. In that era, the
International Watch Company (IWC) in Schaffhausen, was
owned by VDO. Later on, the multinational company
Mannesmann had VDO in its portfolio.
VDO passed the order to IWC, although, at that time two other
famous watch brands Jaeger LeCoultre and Lange, were also
owned by VDO. However, these two companies were not
famous for producing divers watches. Around 1970, few watch
companies had produced reliable divers watches on a large
scale. Among the producers were a few who discovered a
potential role of scuba diving and commercial diving for the oil
industry. These companies were Blancpain, Rolex, Doxa and
Omega.

The legendary Mark 11 is the original pilot’s watch made to the strict 6B/346 specification by the British Military of Defense (MoD) and issued to navigators in the RAF and later in the Australian RAAF. In 1959 the First Moscow Watch Factory (1МЧЗ)began producing one of its first chronographs, the Strela (Arrow) 3017. This chronograph was built to military specifications for officers of the Soviet Bloc Air Forces. All text on the dial is printed in Cyrillic; unlike the Poljot and Sekonda 3017 chronographs which followed and were intended for export. Use of Cyrillic text was phased out of production in 1965. The white dial utilizes applied gold hour indices, numerals and hands, while the chronograph center seconds hand is blued steel.

Based on the Swiss Venus 150, the Strela 19 jewel, 3017 calibre movement runs at 18,000 bph and is neither shock protected nor hacking. The similarities between the above Strela 3017 and the Swiss Venus 150 are easily recognized when comparisons are made – below is a 1940s Breitling chronograph featuring a 17 jewel, Venus 150 (family) movement.
An estimated production date can be garnered by dividing the movement number (in this case 07908) by 5000 and then adding 1959 to the result. Using this method, the example above dates to the year 1960.
As with the Czechoslovak Air Force issued 1930s / 40s Longines aviator and the 1950s Eterna and Lemania watches, the Strela casebacks are markedMAJETK VOJENSKE’ SPRA’VY, which translates to “Property of Military Affairs” or “Property of Military Establishment” (depending upon the translator). A unique serial number is also included on the back of each watch.

Since the unilateral declaration of independence (UDI) from the United Kingdom in 1965, Rhodesia struggled for survival against international sanctions, a growing insurgency fueled by the Eastern bloc and adverse world opinion.
1965 -Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith unilaterally declares independence under white minority rule, sparking international outrage and economic sanctions.
1972 – Guerrilla war against white rule intensifies, with rivals ZANU and ZAPU operating out of Zambia and Mozambique respectively.
The Rhodesian Army was small, but very well trained. Molded after the British Army and originally an all volunteer service, national service was introduced to counter the insurgency. Mercenaries, mostly from South Africa, United Kingdom, but also USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and many European countries, especially Portugal, fought alongside the Rhodesians. While usually classified as mercenaries, these foreign volunteers were paid the same as Rhodesian troops, underwent the same training and were subjected to the same regulations and were integrally part of the units they served in (mostly in the Rhodesian Light Infantry, but also other units).

The IWC Porsche Design Ocean Bund has a special place in IWC collectors’ hearts. It follows IWC’s grand tradition of military watches
The Porsche Design Ocean watch for the Bundeswehr had various minor design changes from the civilian version. These primarily involved a black bezel, an orange minutes hand, a flat sapphire crystal, and a nylon strap (a titanium bracelet was sold to the German Navy separately and was not affixed by IWC to the watch). In addition, to comply with the Bundeswehr's specifications, the watch was tested for water resistance to "only" 300 meters, unlike the 2000 meters of the civilian Ocean 2000. However, one German military watch expert told me that the watches were more water resistant than 300 meters, but only tested to the that standard

The first chronograph of Heuer-Leonidas for the Bundeswehr was Leonidas (cal. Valjoux 22) in relatively rare items and accordingly interesting for the collector. Next came Heuer and Sinn (cal. Heuer 1550 equal to Vx 23) in the same steel case like the Leonidas but with a somewhat different movement. The models of Heuer and Sinn are identical. The reason is that Sinn was the German supplier for Heuer of Switzerland.
The chronograph of Heuer was supplied in a very interesting variation together with a theodolit for astro navigation, but regulated in sidereal time (cal. 1551 SGSZ). Vers.-Nr.: 6645-12-148-2298.
Movement: Valjoux MN 230, flyback function, 36 h 17 jewels, max. + 10 s/day, max. pressure: 3 bar, working temperature: -18 C to 6o C, Incabloc-shock resist, antimagnetic, H3- luminescent, year of introduction: 1968, weight: 50 g, producer: Heuer-Leonidas S.A. Biel, Switzerland.
Application:
All hand-worn models had the flyback function similar to those of the Third Reich Air Force and to those of the French Air Force, which allowed the chronograph to be pushed back to zero while running, with the capability of immediate restart.
This chronograph is regulated to sideral time and is part of an equipment for astronavigation ‘Vermessung Theodolith 6675-12-140-9136’ and to ‘astronomische Richtungsbestimmung,Vers.Nr. 6675-12-308-8782 ’ in a nice leather case.
The chronograph was used to get the time while observing the azimut in astronomic measurements. A sun year has 365 days, a.sun day has 24 hours, because of the earth moving around the sun in one year a sideral year has 366 days starting in spring and a sideral day has 23 hours, 56 min.and 3,5 seconds. The KonTiki Super’s stainless steel, tonneau-shaped case measures 41mm X 45mm X 14mm, a 20mm lug width, and features an unsigned screw down crown at the 3 o’clock position. The dial bears the Eterna “5 ball logo”, based on the ballbearing Eterna developed to carry the self winding swing weight. Tritium luminous is used on the dial, hands, and bezel marker, as is typical for watches of this vintage. With the screw down crown, screw caseback, and thick mineral glass crystal the watch is rated to 200 meters water resistance.
The engravings on the caseback clearly identify these watches as belonging to, and issued by, the IDF. These markings, being in Hebrew, read from right to left and begins with the letter that resembles a ” y “ – the letter is Tzade in Hebrew and represents the word ” Tzahal “ : the acronym for Tzvah Hagana L’Israel - Israel Defense Forces. Following is the serial number for each particular watch ( 377276 for the example below) – and ending with the Hebrew letter ” Nun ” (pronounced as “noon” ) which resembles the letter ” J “. The lower portion of the caseback is marked with letters “mem” , “samech” and then “Kuf” , “tet” - short for catalog number ; followed by the parts / catalog number ( 1000 8943 for the example below).
The caseback center shows the KonTiki raft with Eterna logo sail – both this symbol and the name KonTiki are derived from the Thor Heyerdahl expedition which crossed the Pacific Ocean in 1947 on a balsa wood raft to demonstrate the possibility of population movements from South America to Polynesia.
The KonTiki Super uses the “workhorse” ETA cal. 2824, 25 jewel, automatic, Eterna decorated movement. The 2824 is hacking and features a quick-set date and runs at 28,800 bph ; while common and unspectacular the 2824 is a very reliable and robust movement still found in many watches today (from Doxa dive watches to the Canadian issued Marathon SAR).

This watch was worn by David Dare Parker, the Australian War Memorial's Official Photographer during his assigment to Iraq in 2003. David Dare Parker was made an Official Photographer for the Australian War Memorial in 2003, the first such appointment since the Second World War. In company with the artist Lewis Miller, Parker worked alongside the Australian Defence Forces (ADF), and was deployed to Iraq, the Persian Gulf and other Middle Eastern locations for a period of six weeks during April-May 2003. During this time, he was clothed and equipped with ADF issue items. The official purpose of his engagement was to create a visual record of Australian services participating in Operation ‘Falconer’, including representing the diversity of operations of the ADF, as well as the civilian environment. He was attached to units such as Royal Australian Navy mine clearance teams, and had opportunities to photograph Royal Australian Air Force fighter aircraft on their final combat operations over Baghdad as well as interception duties by HMA Ships Kanimbla and Anzac. At the time of his appointment to the Memorial, David Dare Parker was a recognised photojournalist and a multiple finalist in the Walkley Award for Best Feature Photograph, which he won in 1997. The award is granted by the Walkley Foundation, in recognition of the work of Australian photographers, by the media industry and their journalistic peers, for skill, versatility and technical excellence. Parker also worked in East Timor at the end of the Indonesian occupation in 1999, capturing images of the civilian environment and of ADF Peacekeeping activities.

Με 1000 σε Hamilton πας σε ρολόγια με valjoux 7750 κλασεις ανώτερο από longines με μια απλή 2824 όπως λες κι εσύ...

Το λονζιν τα δικαιολογει τα λεφτα του, ειναι αρκετα πανω απο χαμιλτον χακι, για να μη πω καμια σχεση, απο μια εταιρεια που για παρα πολλα χρονια προμηθευε στρατιωτικα ρολογια, νομιζω οτι εχει κ το ´δικαιωμά´ να τα μεταλλασει λογω dna οπως θελει, αλλωστα τα 44 χιλ ειναι αρκετα συγχρονα κ σιγουρα δεν ειναι καταδυτικο κ υψος για να δειχνει ογκωδες, στο καρπο μου τουλαχιστον εκατσε ιδανικα κ διγουρα αδικειται απο τις φωτοΘα το δω και θα επανελθω...

οσο για το αλλο σκελος καλα ειναι να εχουμε πιασει το ρολοι στα χερια μας και ας μην μας ανηκει, αν μου πει καποιος επιασα το ταδε και δεν μου γεμησε το ματι θα ακουσω την αποψη του παραπανω απο εναν που δεν το εχει καν πιασει ,αν ειναι και κατοχος ακομα καλυτερα απλα ως κατοχος δεν ειναι αντικειμενικος συνηθως!

The official purpose of his engagement was to create a visual record of Australian services participating in Operation ‘Falconer’, including representing the diversity of operations of the ADF, as well as the civilian environment. He was attached to units such as Royal Australian Navy mine clearance teams, and had opportunities to photograph Royal Australian Air Force fighter aircraft on their final combat operations over Baghdad as well as interception duties by HMA Ships Kanimbla and Anzac. At the time of his appointment to the Memorial, David Dare Parker was a recognised photojournalist and a multiple finalist in the Walkley Award for Best Feature Photograph, which he won in 1997. The award is granted by the Walkley Foundation, in recognition of the work of Australian photographers, by the media industry and their journalistic peers, for skill, versatility and technical excellence. Parker also worked in East Timor at the end of the Indonesian occupation in 1999, capturing images of the civilian environment and of ADF Peacekeeping activities.

Bell & Ross were fast out of the blocks when they started in 1992, offering re-branded Sinns as you picture. This was one of their earlier offerings, probably not from day one, but certainly after it was offered by a few others.
The case was used by Arctos for their Bund in 1982, by Heuer for the AMI in 1985 (and Lemania offered their own-brand version of the same watch), and by Tengler for their Bund offering later on in the 90s.
Sinn certainly improved the case, and offered shrouded pushers, increased WR and titanium versions later on, culminating in the EZM4 Achilles.
However, I don't know when they first offered it.
Perhaps someone else can help.
I would add that the Sinn 156 was reputed to have been developed to try and win the Bund contract which was one by the first of the Lemania 5100 Bund chronos, the Porsche Design made by Orfina, which was issued since 1979. the PD uses a different case. It stands to reason the the 157 post-dates that contract.
It is also certain that the case was not developed, designed or made by Sinn, as it is found in these other watches. It was most likely a bought in component, assembled by Guinand, as all Sinn watches were at that time.
So who made it, and when, is anyones guess between 1979 and 1982.

αλλα για εμενα το απολυτο στρατιωτικο-καταδυτικο ρολοι ηταν το ρωσικο zlatoust !!! με μεγεθος κασας στα 60mm!! προσφατα αγορασα μια επανεκδοση απο την εταιρια moscow classic το οποιο βγαινει σε ατοφια ατσαλινη κασα στα 58 mm και λεω ατοφια γιατι παλια ειχαν κυκλοφορησει κατι ψευτικα τα οποια ειχαν μπρουτζινη επιχρωμιωμενη κασα.
αυτο που αγορασα ειναι κουρδιστο με μηχανη 3602 (σκυλι σε αξιοπιστια).

Μακράν ότι χειρότερο εχω δει...
1ον- Η κοπελίτσα έχει πλήρη άγνοια του πως ρυθμίζεται ο αορτήρας (εκτός του ότι είναι και λάθος τύπος αορτήρα). Η εικόνα της αραβίδας που σχεδόν ακουμπά στο έδαφος, μόνο αξιοθρήνητη μπορεί να χαρακτηριστεί!
2ον- Ενώ υπάρχει το sling mount κάτω από το μπροστινό σκοπευτικό της αραβίδας, αυτή προτίμησε να το δέσει πάνω στο σκοπευτικό!!!
3ον- Η γενική εικόνα της παραπέμπει αντάρτη παρά σε έφεδρο οπλίτη. Ανοικτές τσέπες, τελειωμένα άρβυλα, βρώμικη φόρμα, λυμένα και ασύμμετρα μανίκια! Εικόνα αποκρουστική!

A German Army service watch for sale made Zenith, Switzerland. The WW2 German watch with the typical black dial bearing luminous hour markers. The case chrome plated brass. Reverse bears screw back-plate with the typically curved engraved 'D-H' issue number (a style only used by Zenith). The service watch retains its inner 'antimagnetic' movement protection cover. Beautiful quality mercuric gilt movement by Zenith.

Στην από κάτω σπάνια εικόνα βλέπουμε το Milus instade date σε ένα ιδιαίτερο πακέτο με χρυσα δαχτυλιδια και καδενα.
