Wempe Glashütte I/SA Iron Walker Chronograph XL

The Glashütte based independent family-owned company has been manufacturing precise timepieces in its own watchmakers’ ateliers since 2006. Each one of them has been certified as a chronometer according to the stringent German ISO 3159 standard at the observatory in Glashütte.

In 2020, the company’s two wristwatch lines — Wempe Chronometerwerke, which has its own manufacture calibers, and Wempe Zeitmeister, which features mechanical basic models — were joined by a third: the Wempe Iron Walker, a strikingly sporty stainless-steel watch with an integrated metal wristband. The brand has now launched the new Iron Walker Chronograph XL.

The first automatic chronograph in the Iron Walker line is a powerful combination of functionality, chronometric precision, and sporty features. Wempe Glashütte I/SA is now launching the Iron Walker Chronograph XL in a large format and two color versions as a daily-use alternative for first movers: with a dial in matte black or Nordic blue.

The bezels and the chronograph buttons are coated with natural rubber in harmonizing colors. In addition to the stainless-steel wristbands, exceptionally durable and supple rubber wristbands are also being offered in the Iron Walker line for the first time.

The stainless-steel case with its striking 44-millimeter diameter was designed for style-conscious people who decide for themselves. It creates space for more distinct figures — the best precondition for effortless readability of the chronograph functions.

tive coating on both sides and a Super-LumiNova coating on the hour and minute hands, as well as the steel hour markers, provide such clearly legible contrasts that the timer can be used in all lighting conditions. An additional function is performed by the rubber-coated stainless-steel bezel, which acts as a shock absorber to lessen impacts.

The totalizers are edged with stainless steel and stand out to provide better readability, with the twelve-hour counter situated at six o’clock and the thirty-minute counter at twelve o’clock. To ensure that the stop-seconds can be read precisely when the stopwatch feature is used, it is centrally mounted and points to the tachymeter scale.

The small seconds subdial is placed at nine o’clock and the date is displayed at three o’clock. This clear arrangement of elements on the dial ensures an optimal overview and gives the watch a harmonious overall appearance.

The chronograph is controlled with two pushbuttons located directly next to the side protectors of the crown. The crown is a screw-in version, as is the case back, in order to guarantee water-resistance to 10 bar (100 meters).

To ensure that Wempe standards are met, it is mounted in the company’s own ateliers in Glashütte, Saxony, and optimized with an eccentric fine adjustment. This work is performed with such precision that it passes the stringent German chronometric testing according to the ISO 3159 standard, with a maximum average rate variation of only two seconds per day when mounted in the case.

Size: 42mm wide

Inside the watch is the German Chronometer-certified Swiss Sellita SW300 automatic mechanical movement. This is essentially the same as the Swiss ETA 2892-A2, not a fairly uncommon movement, but a solid workhorse. The movement operates at 4Hz (28,800 bph) and has about two days of power reserve, so it’s an acceptable movement for a timepiece of this quality and price. The rear of the watch is similar to most of the Wempe timepieces I’ve seen—it has an engraved picture of Wempe’s Sternwarte observatory in Glashutte. Though this makes sense, as it’s where the watches are assembled and tested, the image isn’t particularly exciting in my opinion. What is cool, however, is that each watch has a personalized and unique serial number that is individually engraved on the rear of each case. Another interesting detail is the distinctive “multiple W” Wempe logo engraved into the screw-down crown.

$2,860 USD
