Aramar Worldport GMT WATCHAbout this projectIntroducing the Aramar Worldport GMT
Our names are Maurice and Rabea Rutten and we have been making watches with Aramar for a couple of years now. We sold some highly sought after watch models, like the Aramar Arctic Ocean, which is a true cult watch. At this moment the current line up of Aramar consists of three watch models which sell quite well. For this project we are partnering with Kickstarter in hopes that we can grow our customer base and increase our production numbers. This iconic new watch design at the competitive price point we are offering is one way that we hope to reach our goal.
The DesignThe design of Aramar Worldport GMT is based on the first watches handed out to the airline pilots who started flying the first jetliners. In the 50's aviation changed dramatically when the first succesful jetliners were launched. Due to the much higher travelling speeds, the airline pilots went faster then ever through several time zones. In order to keep pace with home, the watches handed out to them were fitted with an extra GMT hand. On top of that, a rotating bezel was installed to calculate the time difference with home, using the GMT hand. The bezels were made in two colors, blue and red. Where blue stands for evening / night and red for morning / day.
The dial is very easy readable with it's deep black color and bright white lume dots. The hands, in the famous Mercedes Style, are easy to read as well, with it's contrasting white lume against the black dial. To make the GMT hand easy to read as well, this has been made in the color red. In order to make the date easy to read, a date magnifying loupe has been installed, which magnifies the date three times.
Case and BraceletThe case is bullit poof built from 316L Stainless Steel and is water ressistant up to 500m / 1650ft. The case measures 42mm without the crown and the lugsize is 22mm. The lug to lug distance is 49mm, the height is 14mm.
The glass is sapphire crystal, making it impossible to scratch. The lugs have drilled lug holes, in order to make changing straps much more easy.
The caseback is decorated with the Boeing 707 jetliner.
The caseback in this picture is from the prototype. The caseback of the production model will feature the text Limited Edition and 001 - 500, along side the Boeing 707. It is not possible to choose any number from this limited series!!
The bracelet is solids and made of 316L stainless steel and has srews to adjust it. It has solid end links as well. There is also a fine adjustment option on the safety clasp.
LumeFor the luminous material on the dial, hands, and bezel, we are using a Swiss product from Superluminova called H8. This is one of the brightest and highest quality lumes that is available at this moment. We apply several layers of this lume to increase the intensity and longevity of the glow. I have tested it and in the morning you can still easily read your watch!
As movement we have choosen to go the Swiss way. The very reliable ETA 2836-2 automatic movement is used for the Worldport GMT. Each movement is carefully inspected, regulated and, to our specifications, modded with a fixed GMT hand. This movement has 25 jewels and runs at 28.800 vph.
White dialThe story goes that the pilots of the first jetliners were not receiving their watches anymore when they joined the airline. It appeared that at some moment the management decided to keep these watches to themselves. The decision was made by the CEO to hand out a small batch of watches with a white dial to the management and keep the black dial versions for the pilots.
Our white dial version is equipped with a slightly off-white highly legible dial with clearly marked hour markers. A truely stunning watch, next to the black dial Worldport GMT. The look of the white dial changes all the time depending on the lighting conditions.
