HISTORY

 

In 2010 the TUDOR watch brand launched an ambitious project to develop its industrial production capacity for mechanical movements. To this end, the brand brought together a group of experts and presented an initial calibre manufactured by TUDOR at Baselworld in 2015, in variations to equip two different watches.

The following year the Genevan watch brand created the Kenissi company to oversee the development and production of its movements and, in parallel, offer its technical expertise in the field of movements to third-party brands. The first industrial partnership was then forged with Breitling. As its business developed, in 2018 Kenissi then formed an industrial alliance with Chanel, supplying the calibre for its new J12.

Today Kenissi offers a wide range of self-winding movements derived from the TUDOR Manufacture calibres. These customisable, high-performance, highly robust movements are entirely developed and produced in Switzerland.

Kenissi is a Geneva-based watch movement manufacturer, 20% owned by Chanel and sharing production space with Tudor.

Kenissi was formed in 2016 and is managed by Eric Yvon Pirson (head of Tudor), Jean-Paul Girardin (formerly of Breitling), and Philippe Jacques Dalloz.

In 2018 it was revealed that Kenissi was partnering with Tudor to build a new movement manufacture in Le Locle on land owned by Rolex. The operation would be 50% owned by each partner and is expected to open by 2022.

In January 2019, it was announced that Chanel had taken a 20% ownership stake in Kenissi.

Tudor

The brand responsible for the inception of Kenissi and the impressive reach it has had so far is certainly Tudor. The movements feature in an extensive line-up of watches, numbering more than 10 different derivations of the MT5XXX calibre. Certainly one of the crucial elements of the immense success of the Black Bay line, Kenissi movements can now be found in the Pelagos, Ranger and Glamour.

Breitling

Partnering Tudor, and by extension, Kenissi, marked the first industrial partnership for the movement manufacturer. Powering their SuperOcean Heritage, it follows Tudor’s steps in powering a vintage-inspired diver, alongside the Pelagos and 41mm Black Bay line-up.

Tag Heuer

One of the latest adopters of Kenissi movements, TAG Heuer presented its Superdiver with the Calibre TH30-00. It is manufactured exclusively for TAG Heuer, but the connections to the rest of the Kenissi family are clear in its architecture, namely the balance bridge. COSC-certified and with 70 hours of power reserve, it’s a fitting choice for the ultimate TAG Heuer diver.


Chanel

Chanel joined the Kenissi group in 2019, currently holding a 20% stake, with the manufacturer supplying them with the J12 movement found in the watch that shares the same name. With ties to the Tudor MT56XXX line-up, we see the common theme of a 70-hour power reserve, free-sprung balance and double-sided balance bridge.

Norqain

First partnering with an up-and-coming movement manufacturer before bringing the legend that is Jean-Claude Biver on board, the Norqain brand has been going from strength to strength. This is even more impressive, considering its 2018 beginnings. They marked the beginning of their Kenissi collaboration by releasing the Neverest GMT 41mm, powered by the same calibre found in Tudor’s Black Bay GMT.

Fortis

Fortis has been making waves with recent new releases, two of the most notable being the Marinemaster and Stratoliner, the former of which shows clear ties to Kenissi. I was astonished by how well the Fortis Werk 11 ran in our hands-on review, coming in at 0 seconds per day in four positions and with nearly perfect beat error.

Εσύ,τι κατάλαβες ότι ισχύει?

Δεν νομίζω ότι ισχύει κάτι Γιώργο. Ο κόσμος της ωρολογοποιιας, όπως όλοι οι "κόσμοι " φαντάζομαι, είναι κόσμος γνωριμιών.
Από αυτά τα αρθα συμπεραίνω ότι έγινε μια δυνατή συνεργασία από γνώστες του χώρου, είχαν τις κατάλληλες γνωριμίες,το εκμεταλλευτηκαν και συνεχίζουν.
Όσο αφορά τους μηχανισμούς, η προσωπική μου πείρα μου λέει ότι, οι πρώτοι τους μηχανισμοί,είχαν σοβαρα προβλήματά, περίπου ένα 15 τοις εκατό αντικατάσταση, ακόμα πολλοί γκρινιάζουν,έχουμε και ιδίοις παραδείγματα  .
Από τα 6 Tudor που άλλαξα τα 2 είχαν θέμα σοβαρό.
Φαίνεται ότι όσο περνάει ο καιρός τα διόρθωσαν όλα αυτά, και φτιάχνουν πάρα πολύ καλούς μηχανισμούς.
Θέλω πολύ και πιστεύω θα τα καταφέρω να δοκιμάσω τα Fortis και Norqain.

Currently Kenissi is based in Geneva, though there is a new facility being built in Le Locle that should open sometime in 2021. Rolex is building this new manufacture, which will apparently be split between Kenissi and Tudor.
